Radiology (X-ray)Radiographic abnormalities grow early in the course of the disease. X-rays of their lungs and heart would be the best tools available to assess the severity of the disease and also to create a prognosis. Normal changes observed are enlargement of the following constructions: pulmonary arteries at the lobes (particularly the lower lobes) of the lung, main pulmonary artery, and right side of their heart. Blunting and thickening, usually along with tortuosity (abnormal twists or turns), of pulmonary blood vessels, is often noted. Infection can be located in the lung tissue, especially the tissue that surrounds the pulmonary blood vessels.Angiography and UltrasonographyThese forms of imaging are seldom used in the diagnosis of canine heartworm disease outside of referral clinics and teaching institutions. Angiography is a technique which permits visualization of blood vessels within your system by taking radiographs within seconds after injecting a contrast material (dye) into these blood vessels. In canine heartworm infection, angiography is used to study modifications to the pulmonary blood vessels. Worms may be visualized on the angiogram as submitting flaws. Ultrasonography (echocardiography) was utilized to appraise enlargement of the heart chamber and to look for the existence of heartworms in the right ventricle or primary pulmonary artery.
